When you think of Las Vegas the Flamingo Hotel is undoubtedly the most historic and famous property on the strip. Billy Wilkerson originally started the Flamingo Hotel construction effort but soon found himself short of money so he started looking for investors. Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel and his organized crime associates soon caught wind of Wilkerson's cash flow problem and made him an offer he could not refuse in exchange for part ownership of the property. Mr. Wilkerson agreed to retain 1/3 ownership and operationl control in order to finish the Flamingo using Siegel's money. The projected cost to finish the Flaming was $1 million dollars but it ended up costing more that $6 million. When the Flamingo Hotel was finished it was considered by many to be one of the finest Hotels in the World. The Flamingo Hotel paved the way for the modern day super hotel and casinos concepts that line the Las Vegas Strip.The last remaining original structure was torn down in 1993 and the property has been through many rennovations to keep it's atractive and authentic appeal.
